The trail is quite exposed in places and comes close to the cliff edge so use caution. The numbers on the map correspond to numbered trail markers within the woods. Pick up the directions at 9.8 below by turning RIGHT back onto Splitrock (BLUE). The trail skirts Misty Pond with a beaver dam out in the middle of it. Also, too many downed trees across the trail, and lots of them quite old - not well-maintained. There isn’t anything particular in this section that you’ll miss, but it’s nice hiking. Also Known As: Solitrock Pond, Solitrock Reservoir, Split Rock Pond, and Splitrock Pond. It was incredible seeing the reservoir up close on the west side from the Four Birds Trail, then seeing it from far above on the Split Rock Trail. 4.7 – Keep following Four Birds Trail (WHITE) past the the ORANGE trail (easy to miss). Route 23 North to Newfoundland, turn around via the U-turn system at LaRue Road to head south on Route 23. Trail entry is through the Farny Natural Area. 0.5 – Watch for the blazes, and Turn RIGHT to start following Four Birds Trail (WHITE). This often fills up and if it is, you are out of luck…. Continue following Splitrock (BLUE) straight. I went clockwise to do the biggest elevation gain up front. The island can be a nice stop if you bring a picnic lunch. At this point, look left and you will spot White trail markers. The only road crossing throughout the entire loop is Splitrock Road. Also will need to cross a quarter mile long vehicle-only bridge at the end, if going counterclockwise, Beautiful trail well marked! Split Rock road seemed to be in good shape 8/2020 was full of decent sized potholes 4/2018. Great trail, blazes were mostly easy to follow. 6.8 – Continue following Splitrock (BLUE) as it crosses Charlottesburg Rd (an eroded woods road that is unmarked). Views of the reservoir from the bridge, through a chain link fence. There are times when blazes are missing for a while, but the trail leaves little doubt where to go. Only did a little less than half the hike! Turn right on the Split Rock Trail. That said it is easy to get lost because there are well worn trails that are not on the map. It’s on the right hand side almost half a mile up from the parking lot. Couple of good views, but that’s it - not much for 11 miles. Follow Greenpond Rd to Hebernia rd. This trail leads downhill for 0.8 mile and crosses Highway 61. Turn right on an SHT spur trail to Split Rock Lighthouse State Park. The hike is just over 2 miles with minor ups and downs, and offers a mini “best-of” scenery tour, with some of the best rock viewing including Face Rock. Enter Boy Scout camp only with permission. After starting the hike, you actually turn left onto Split Rock Road and walk over a dam to get to the beginning of the New York-New Jersey Trail Conference trail. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash. You will reach the end of the Orange trail, marked by 3 Orange trail blazes (two on top, one on bottom). The viewpoints are nice but the trail had trash and an old car. A good portion of it follows a fire road. Not for beginners. On the way out, within half a mile of the lot, we did stumble on a bear and three cubs - what a sight! You are now north of the reservoir and are heading to the east side. Turned around when I came upon a TON of deer about 2 miles down trail (15+). The trail can be difficult to follow at times. This cuts 2.1 miles of steep hiking off the route. There is about 20 spots to in the parking area and parking lot. The Split Rock Trail is a coastal trail that reminds me of the Lighthouse Trail on Grand Manan Island but is much easier to access. [Note: Just before the road, the map shows an unmarked trail that leads back to the lot but we didn’t see it, so instead of bushwhacking around looking we decided to use the road as usual. Keep walking down the dirt road. Mostly in the woods. Although relatively short in distance (and nearly a mile of the hike follows roads), this is a very rugged hike, which involves climbing up and down many rocky ledges. I probably only hiked about 3 miles. This is a vigorous hike best for those who like a long hike. The Split Rock Trail took us up about 300 vertical feet in 0.5 miles, landing us on top of the rock outcropping with spectacular views of the reservoir from above about 6.25 miles into our day. The parking area is right off Split Rock Road, at the southern end of the reservoir. Either way requires a dusty road walk at the beginning and end of the hike. Guidelines. The white trail [also marked with red circle blazes, black blazes and dark blue blazes] takes you directly to Charlottesburg Road [another old woods road] along Split Rock Reservoir. Not much too see. There is a man-made dam on the southwest end of the reservoir.
